The
field of atmospheric aerosol measurement has experimented numerous
changes in recent years, both in the technology available and in the
legislation governing it.
From a legislative point of view, the evolution has
gone from the measurement of Total Suspended Particles (TSP) to the
measurement of PM10 fraction, with the current requirement being the
measurement of PM10 and PM2.5 fractions.
Moreover, technology has also advanced and new applications have
been developed which enable us to measure not just PM10, PM2.5 and PM1
fractions continuous and simultaneosly using one monitor but also
supplying us with information about the sizes and distributios of
particles in atmospheric aerosols, reaching even nanometric precision
in some special models.
Additionally, recent studies have proven that the semi-volatile
fraction of PM2.5 contributes 20-50% to the total PM2.5 mass. The
semi-volatile fraction consists mainly of sulphates, nitrates,
ammonium, ammonium nitrates, etc. In order to determine the correct
mass of PM10 and PM2.5 it is crucial to measure both the non-volatile
and volatile content.
It is important to note that some dust monitors heat the sample
input to prevent condensation, which in turn causes the loss of
volatile fraction thus resulting in readings below the real value.
These devices can also operate autonomously and unattended (with
data transmission) or together with gas analyzers, integrated into an
atmospheric contamination monitoring station.
There is wide range of instrumentation which can be used in the following applications:
●
Mobile ●
Semi-mobile
